Understanding Adult ADHD: Beyond the Misconceptions

Are you the person who… feels like they’re not living up to their full potential, no matter how successful they appear to everyone else?

… knows they’re intelligent and highly competent person but simultaneously gets overwhelmed by the smallest of details/tasks?

… can go from motivated machine to a couch potato that can’t seem to get anything done?—it’s like there’s only an on and off switch with nothing in between.

… feels like they’re too much and vacillates between holding back and over sharing?

… feels really activated when they perceive themselves as being blamed?

… feels out of control with food and can’t get find balance or consistency with nourishing themselves—I eat too much or I don’t eat for hours at a time?

struggles to keep a job or stay in one role for long because you get bored or your attention tends to get caught by something newer and seemingly better?

… has amazing ideas but struggles to take action and see a single one through fruition?

thrives with routine but really struggles to create it for themselves and stick to it with out external motivators?

… functions on autopilot but completely falls apart when there are small changes in their environment?

… never feels 100%?

Do you ever feel like you're living a double life?

You might be brilliant and engaging in conversations, yet overanalyze them later. Perhaps you struggle with overwhelm after having a baby, or feel like you're not reaching your full potential despite outward success. Maybe you deeply long for connection but struggle to manage reactions when you perceive even the smallest amount of criticism. These experiences, along with many others, could be signs of ADHD in adults. If you resonated with or answered yes to any of the questions above there is a strong possibility you may be struggling with undiagnosed adult ADHD.

What is ADHD?

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and is a neurological condition that affects how adults focus, manage impulses, and regulate their emotions.

Unlike the childhood stereotype of a little boy with bouncing-off-the-walls energy, adult ADHD occurs in both men and women and often shows up as:

  • Trouble focusing: Easily distracted, forgetful, losing things constantly.

  • Disorganization: Struggling to plan, prioritize, and meet deadlines.

  • Impulsivity: Making quick decisions without thinking, blurting things out, interrupting others.

  • Restlessness: Feeling fidgety, having trouble sitting still, needing constant stimulation.

Adult ADHD is a real and prevalent condition affecting millions worldwide. It manifests differently in each individual, and the symptoms can be far more nuanced than simply being hyperactive or inattentive.

Common Experiences of Adults with ADHD:

  • Feeling like you're "too much" or holding back, struggling with managing the intensity of your emotions.

  • Experiencing intense focus and motivation followed by periods of low energy and procrastination.

  • Having difficulty managing food intake and maintaining consistent eating habits.

  • Struggling to keep a job or stay in one role due to boredom or novelty seeking—the grass always seems to be greener everywhere else!

  • Having brilliant ideas but facing challenges with taking action and following through—youre like an ideas machine, but you lose steam quickly and struggle to complete many projects.

  • Thriving with routine but finding it difficult to create and stick to a routine independently.

  • Feeling overwhelmed by even minor changes in your environment.

These experiences often stem from challenges with self-regulation and executive function, core aspects of ADHD.

“We are NOT Flawed. We are wired differently, and brilliantly, and we bring very unique gifts to the table.”

Alejandra Cervantes, ADHD specialist, Describes her approach to ADHD support for adults.

Our philosophy on ADHD and treatment:

  • ADHD is a difference in neurobiological wiring.

    • While ADHDers (and neurodivergent folks) are cut from the same cloth , we are completely unique in how our ADHD shows up. We are not flawed. we are wired differently. We can design our lives in a way that brings out our strengths and talents and highlights our uniqueness rather than trying to morph yourself into something that isn’t you. Our goal is to help you figure out who YOU truly are beneath the masks you’ve put on over the years to try and blend into a neurotypical world.

  • We take a strengths based approach.

    • No more beating yourself up. Its time to learn all about how ADHD makes you unique and amazing. We will help you design a live that aligns with your values, skills, and talents—a life that is tailor-made for YOU—not your partner, your parents, or anyone else. Work with us to witness the difference that taking a strengths based approach can have on your mood, confidence, and success. Invest in your present and future-self by allowing yourself to embrace who YOU truly are and all of your MAGIC!
